Spirometry is the basic method of lung function diagnostics. This test measures the amount of air when breathing in and out as well as the speed of the air flow. The lung function test is used to differentiate between obstructive diseases of the lungs and bronchi (e.g. asthma, COPD) and restrictive diseases (e.g. thoracic deformities, pulmonary fibrosis) and to diagnose, control or rule them out. The lung function test is therefore an important part of the diagnosis of (exercise) shortness of breath and also plays an important role in differentiating between diseases of the cardiovascular system.
This examination method is painless and non-invasive. Spirometry provides reliable information about your lung function, the results of which can be evaluated and discussed immediately after the test. If you are taking medication, such as asthma sprays, you should discuss with your general practitioner in Frankfurt beforehand whether you should stop taking the medication on the day of the examination.
